While studying at the NFTS, I remember Freddie Francis telling us that filmmaking is often like fitting a rocket engine to a lawnmower. It may be a powerful tool, but unless it is doing the right job for the story, it is no use at all. That has stayed with me.

Working with Joanna Hogg had a big influence on the way I approach design, particularly the idea that visual choices should be carefully considered and fully committed, without ever feeling imposed on the film.

I’m interested in all aspects of design when they grow naturally from character and subtext, whether that means creating something quiet and understated or building a much larger world around the story.

I enjoy moving between independent productions and larger-scale jobs, and try to bring the same practical thinking, attention to detail and curiosity to each one.
