BFDG New Members

Who Can Apply

Membership is open to professionals working within the Art Department for film and television, or to those whose work is closely aligned with the Art Department and deemed appropriate by the Admissions Committee.

Applicants should apply at their current credited working level and be able to demonstrate recent professional experience at that grade.

Membership Criteria

BFDG membership grades reflect professional experience in the Art Department, based primarily on time spent in the role, and credits, ranging from 6 months/1 credit for entry-level to 2 years/3 credits for senior levels.

Entry requirements vary by role and seniority, with all applications assessed against clear criteria for credits, time served, and professional endorsement to ensure consistent standards across the Guild.

Membership Criteria Checker

Applicants should normally apply at their current working grade. Credits should reflect professional film or television work at the level being applied for. All applications are reviewed by the Admissions Committee.

Newcomer Membership

The Newcomer membership category is a time-limited 2-year entry level intended for individuals at the early stages of their careers in the Art Department for film, television, and related visual media, recent graduates who have completed a relevant Production Design or related course at a recognised institution or for those transferring into the industry from a related creative discipline.

It provides an entry route into the Guild while maintaining professional standards and ensuring that applicants demonstrate a genuine commitment to building a career within the Art Department.

There will be two annual Newcomer intakes offering up to 65 places per year, 25 reserved for graduates of our Educational Partners and up to 40 for external applicants. This new approach enables the Guild to deliver a more structured, high-quality Newcomer programme, with a stronger induction and more meaningful support throughout the first two years of membership.

Graduate Membership

Graduates in their last year of study with our *Educational Partners or recognised institution, may apply for graduate membership with the endorsement of a course tutor. With full access to the Guild membership, graduates can take advantage of the opportunity to network with members across the Art Department and get that head start on their future careers.

*Graduates from our Educational Partners will, on approval, be upgraded to the Newcomer level.
